What is a Mitered Edge Profile?

What is a Mitered Edge Profile?

A mitered edge creates a seamless edge between the top of the countertop and a second piece of stone to create a specialty edge or to join a waterfall panel. The mitered seam allows the pattern to “wrap” from the horizontal surface to the vertical surface. The countertop slab material must be expertly cut at a 45 degree angle and perfectly mounted for the pattern of the stone to remain consistent.

How Is It Used?

Mitered edges are commonly used to create a seamless flow from a countertop slab to a waterfall panel that extends to the floor. A mitered edge can also be used to add more stone to the underside of a countertop slab creating a distinguished look through the illusion of a thicker slab.

Mitered edges can be used to hide the support structure underneath an island or to make smooth transitions between different level bar tops.

Where is it Used?

Mitered edges are very common in commercial projects and are continuing to become more popular for residential use. Many fabricators are not comfortable fabricating a mitered edge and they may try to steer you to a stacked edge instead.

Stacked edges are very popular, but you need to be certain that it is the look you want. A stacked edge may often be inconspicuous, but not invisible. Look for more information about stacked edges in our upcoming article “What is a Stacked Edge?”.

How is it Cut?

A skilled fabricator cuts the edges of the stone at a 45 degree angle to form a frame of the slab material around the sides to make the slab look thicker. The seam should almost be invisible and the pattern of the material should flow from top to side with little variation in the pattern. It is difficult to achieve a crisp line without the proper tools and equipment, such as edging machinery. Many fabricators and installers choose not to offer a mitered edge because of the complexity of the process. If you wish to have a mitered edge you will want to hire an expert fabricator.

What is a Laminated Edge?

Laminate edge refers to the process of gluing pieces of stone together to create a variety of edge profiles including mitered edges, stacked edges, and drop edges.

The lamination process can be used to create more sophisticated edge profiles, such as layering an Ogee Edge over a Full Bullnose Edge.  This has nothing to do with traditional laminate countertops.

Making the Right Decision

Many fabricators do not offer mitered edges due to the difficulty and expertise needed to properly miter a stone edge. Surface One has extensive experience with mitering edges for commercial and residential projects. Both natural stone and quartz countertop materials can be mitered as well.

There is no wrong selection when it comes to choosing an edge profile. Contact Surface One and our design team will help you select the perfect countertop material and edge profile for your project.

Quartz Countertops featured in Downtown Renovation

Quartz Countertops featured in Downtown Renovation

“Downtown Looking Up” written by Cathy Still McGowin in the October issue of Birmingham Home & Garden details the exciting transformation of the 18th floor of the John A Hand Building. The building originally was the American Trust and Savings Bank Building and although the building has seen many renovations over the years, the 18th floor still had the typical look of an office space from the 1912 era. Staying true to the historic architecture while transforming this space to a residence was a challenge but Mike Gibson of Appleseed Workshop was up to the task.

The beautiful living space is a mix of old and new. The home has exposed brick, original flooring and repurposed office doors. Walls of bamboo cabinets for TV, storage and display space, a luxurious soaking tub, and beautiful countertops of white quartz are some of the new elements that blend beautifully with the cool industrial look and feel of the space. The white quartz countertops installed by Surface One are Q by MSI in the color “Snow White”. The stunning views and the location add to the beauty of this lovely space. Surface One was pleased to be part of this downtown Birmingham project.

Cambria Quartz – Guest Services Desks

Custom guest services desks in the newly remodeled Montgomery Wind Creek Casino were fabricated by Surface One using Cambria Quartz. The mitered edges of the quartz countertops create a clean almost seamless design that extends down the sides of each desk to the floor. The deep black pattern of the Edinburough Cambria Quartz complements the vibrant metallic tile that it frames. Cambria Quartz is a popular choice for commercial environments because it is a strong, non-porous material that is resistant to stains and does not need to be sealed.

Waterfall Edge Countertops

Waterfall Edge Countertops

Waterfall edge countertops are a popular choice for kitchen islands and bathroom countertops. A waterfall edge is defined as a seamless countertop edge that continues the countertop material across the top of the surface and down the side of the cabinetry to the floor. It breaks away from the typical, expected horizontal countertop. The waterfall panel creates a connected feeling between the countertop, the cabinetry and the flooring. Waterfall edges, also known as risers or waterfall end panels, combine contemporary and traditional styles to create a clean look.

Waterfall Edge Countertops Design

Waterfall edge countertops are most popularly added to kitchen islands, but can also be used on corner cabinets, and in bathrooms. The waterfall end panels are useful to hide appliances that are placed at the end of counters. The designs of waterfall end panels can transform a contemporary kitchen to a modern, luxurious style. The most popular materials used to create a waterfall edge are marble, granite, and quartzite.

Surface One fabricated the waterfall marble island in the featured image for Byrom Building Company. This 2016 GBAHB Parade of Homes award winning home is located in the Preserve in Hoover, Alabama. The kitchen features a custom designed waterfall edge countertop made of Alabama White Marble.

Surface One can finish waterfall countertops with a seamless edge so the countertop appears to be one continuous slab that runs horizontally across the top of your cabinets and flows vertically down to the floor. Surface One utilizes specialty equipment to fabricate a 45-degree mitered edge to create an almost invisible joint line for a clean, seamless look. The clean edges are a beautiful way to showcase sophisticated countertop materials. Super White Quartzite and Blanco Maple Silestone in Preserve Home

Surface One fabricated and installed Super White Quartzite, Blanco Maple Silestone, Volakas Marble, and Leathered Uba Tuba Granite in this home located in The Preserve in Hoover.

This luxurious home is located in The Preserve in Hoover and was built by Byrom Building Company.  The spacious kitchen has vaulted ceilings with wooden beams that span the kitchen and eating area. Surface One custom fabricated and installed Super White Quartzite on the kitchen counters and the large kitchen island. Quartzite is a natural stone that is popular for kitchens because it is strong, durable and stain resistant. The color variations can give the elegant appearance of Marble with durability that is comparable to Granite.

The natural gray and white pattern of the Super White Quartzite adds a sophisticated look that complements the custom white cabinetry and white subway tile backsplash. The island countertop was custom designed and fabricated to house a large white farmhouse sink. With dark wood flooring and lots of natural light from the breakfast nook windows, this kitchen has an open and comfortable feel.

This home also features a butler’s pantry where Surface One installed Blanco Maple Silestone countertops. Surface One custom fabricated a curve in the edge of this countertop to meet the needs of the client. Silestone Quartz is a durable man-made surface manufactured by Cosentino with a wide variety of colors and textures.

The master bathroom features Volakas Marble on the vanity countertops. Volakas Marble is a natural stone that comes from the mountains in the Drama area of North Greece. The light grey and white pattern adds elegance to any room.

In the upstairs bathroom, a leathered Uba Tuba Granite was selected. Leathered granite is becoming a popular finish for granite that has a natural textured look and feel. Leathered granite is a smart choice for bathrooms because it can add unique style to smaller spaces, and it hides water spots better than many polished surfaces.
